County of Union, UC Alliance Hold Brownfields Redevelopment Forums In Plainfield & Hillside

Two forums on Brownfields redevelopment were held regarding several specific sites in both the City of Plainfield and the Township of Hillside. Brownfields are abandoned, idled or under-used industrial and commercial facilities where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination.

The County of Union and the Union County Alliance co-sponsored these community forums as part of the Brownfields Assessment Demonstration Pilot, which is being undertaken by the County with funding from the United States Department of Environmental Protection (EPA). This is one of many EPA Pilots currently underway in different parts of the county.

Attendees included local residents, business people and community groups that were able to learn about the Brownfields Demonstration Pilot, ask questions and share their opinions and ideas concerning the futures uses of the Brownfields sites.

Representatives of the City of Plainfield and concerned residents were among those attending the Brownfields Community Pilot Outreach program held recently at Union County College in Plainfield. The program was presented by the County of Union and the Union County Alliance.

Adrian Mapp, president of the Plainfield City Council, said, "Today I learned that since one of the Plainfield brownfields sites is nearly completed and underbudget, the overage funds can be re-allocated to another brownfields site for redevelopment. This forum is a great way to educate on all aspects of brownfields redevelopment.”

Union County Freeholder John Wohlrab also attended the forums. “One of the items I learned was that other funding sources can be overlapped for clean-up and redevelopment of these sites,” he said. “This meeting was an important step in bringing the community together to be actively involved in returning properties to productive uses.”

The Brownfields Demonstrations Pilot is designed to engaged communities and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together in a timely manner to be part of the assessment and safe cleanup of Brownfields. The main objective of the Pilot is to return these industrial or commercial sites to a condition that will allow reasonable reuse in the near future.
